Yes that’s possible. These small organisms in a size of less than a micrometer and not visible by eye can bring well-engineered systems to its knees within a short period of time (months). Microorganisms can initiate corrosion or accelerate already existing corrosion processes. This phenomenon is called Microbial Influenced Corrosion (MIC). 20% of all corrosion related damage cases are of microbial origin. The presentation gives an overview how microorganisms attack different materials and cause damages in diverse systems of industry.
